1AA Pre-Season Section Preview |
It looks to be a three way battle for state births between defending champion Owatonna, Lakeville and Red Wing. Owatonna (4th at state, 5th in 2000) looks to defend its title despite losing 3 of their top 5 runners. The squad will be led by seniors Andrew VanNurden (5th last year) and Brian Belting (7th). Lakeville (7th in state last year) loses two of its top four after scoring 62 points at the section meet a year ago. While having no returning runners from last years top 10, they do have a solid returning group that placed 11th, 14th and 16th. Redwing (3rd last year and 4th in 2000) should be strong as its top 5 return from a year ago when they scored fewer than 100 points. Red Wing is led by senior Casey Ide, 3rd last season. Ide had another successful track season running 4:16.62 and 9:30.89 and finishing as the 5th underclassman in both events at the state meet. Individually, two other runners return from last years top 10. Junior Garrett Heath has been one of the state's top runners recently as evidenced by his runner-up finish in last springs 3200 meters with a time of 9:22.97. He also placed 6th in the 1600 with a 4:17.76. Heath is the 3rd returning runner from last years state meet where he placed 6th. Junior Ben Puhl led Rochester Century with an 8th place individual finish a year ago.

2AA Pre-Season Section Preview |
With the exception of the favorite, this section appears very balanced at the top. Marshall moved from 4th in 2000 to 2nd last year. They look to improve again as they become the favorite with all 7 returning from their 11th place state team. The squad is led by senior Hussein Jumale (7th in 2001) and junior Salah Mohamed (10th in 2001). Mankato West has history on its side. Although they lost runners #2-7, they have participated in the state meet all but 2 of the last 25 or so years, finishing as runner-up last year. Their 7th runner a year ago placed 16th in the section, leaving many talented athletes that didn't make last year's varsity squad. Junior Seijen Takamura leads the team, returning to defend his section championship. Prior Lake, finishing 3rd a year ago with 104 points, lost only their top runner. Buffalo, one of the favorites for a state berth last year will be attempting to atone for a mix-up that caused them to miss last year's section meet. They lost two of their top 5 to graduation and looked very strong in the distance events on the track. Finishing 7 points short of a state berth in 2000, Hutchinson should also contend as they return all of last year's top 7 that finished 6th in the section.

Tartan moved into the section a year ago and promptly won its first title followed by a 12th place finish at state. They return all but their top runner from the team that scored 47 points a year ago. Tartan is led by seniors Dan Chapman and Sean Greenlee, both top 10 a year ago. Also new to the section last year, Roseville returns 5 of their top 7 from last year's runner-up team. They will be led by senior Brandon Griffin (6th in 2001) and freshman Tim Branigan (10th in 2001). Senior Dave Borner of Park is the top returning finisher from last year's meet where he placed 3rd. He also had success on the track as he placed 7th at the state meet in the 3200 with a time of 9:38.43. Freshman Sufian Kimo of St. Paul Arlington looks to be a contender after placing 4th a year ago and 26th at state.

6AA Pre-Season Section Preview |
Once again 6AA should be interesting. Whoever has made it out of the section meet over the past years has done very well at state. The trouble is getting out of the section! In the final rankings last year, the section had five of the top seven teams. Survivors to November last year were Hopkins, (state champions) and Wayzata (3rd place). Hopkins also won the state title in 1999 while Wayzata won in 2000. Hopkins is led by last years 9th place finisher at the state meet (4th returning), senior David Van Orsdel. On the track Van Orsdel placed 4th in the 1600 (4:16.55) and ran a 3200 in 9:35.42. Hopkins also returns the 10th place section finisher, senior Tony Klappa, while they lose 2 from their varsity. Wayzata loses their top 4 from a year ago. Other teams ranked in the top 9 at some point a year ago are: Eastview (3rd in the section with 100 points), Eden Prairie (4th-104), Holy Angels (5th-118), Burnsville (6th-157) and Apple Valley (7th-162). Eastview, Eden Prairie, Holy Angels and Apple Valley all return 4 from their varsity squads while Burnsville returns 5. Individually, Eastview's Andy Larsen (senior) also returns from the top 10 after placing 4th in the section a year ago and 9th at state in 2000.

7AA Pre-Season Section Preview |
Although losing 5 of 7, Duluth East's 7th runner placed 17th in the section a year ago and should contend, once again, for a section title. They are led by section runner-up Pete Klopp, a junior. Klopp placed 20th in state last year and is the 7th returning runner. East placed 5th at state last year after earning the runner-up spot in 2000. Last years section runner-up, Cloquet, returns a strong duo in Matt and Mike Kramer. Junior Matt finished 3rd a year ago in the section and 24th at state while Sophomore Mike finished 6th and 36th. Cloquet also returns 2 others from the team that placed 10th at the state meet. Grand Rapids/Bigfork should also contend for a state berth as they return their top 3 and 2 others from their squad that placed 3rd in the section last year with 106 points. (Trailing East's 32 and Cloquet's 62) They are led by top 10 finishers John Heitzman, 4th in the section last year, and sophomore Austun Tavis, 7th.

Moorhead looks to be the favorite to defend their title as they return 5 of 7 from their varsity. Leading the squad will be junior Ben Klungtvedt, 3rd a year ago. Klungtvedt represented the section in last springs 3200 meter run. Last seasons runner-up, Alexandria will need to regroup after losing 5 from their varsity. Hoping to move up at least one spot is Sauk Rapids-Rice, 4th in 2000 and 3rd last year. They finished 8 points from 2nd last year and return 2 from the top 10 with seniors Nate Haeny (2nd in the section last year) and Kevin Grose (9th). Little Falls should also be a contender as they have only lost 2 from a team that placed 10th at state in 2000. Also returning from the top 10 individually is junior Justin Grunewald of Brainerd, 7th a year ago. Grunewald was the 2nd runner from the section at the state meet as he placed 32nd, the 15th returning runner.
